The second Omaha-area location of Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews opened this week outside Westroads Mall, across from Topgolf at 701 N. 104th St. The location was a Joe’s Crab Shack until it closed a couple of years ago.

The small chain, established in 2012, serves an extensive menu of burgers in 50 varieties, chicken sandwiches, mac and cheese, wings and entrees such as meatloaf and fish and shrimp platters. It also has both alcoholic and nonalcoholic milkshakes.

The other Sickies in the metropolitan area is at 1203 Cornhusker Road in Bellevue. There also are outlets in Bismarck and Fargo, North Dakota; Sioux Falls and Rapid City, South Dakota; Kissimmee, Florida; and Las Vegas.

It’s open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.

It started from Garage to Table in 2012, and now Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews is celebrating this milestone birthday of 10 years. In comfort food tradition, Sickies Garage will be offering a limited-time menu that includes some original Midwest-inspired fare and new sweet finishes, including the frosty Birthday Cake Shake.

“When we first opened Sickies Garage, we were just having fun and playing with the car and motorcycle theme we all loved. Now, to have expanded to eight locations with at least two more coming later this year is beyond any expectations we originally had,” said Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews Partner Scott Upton.

Sickies Garage comes full circle with newest eatery in southwest Fargo
The popular restaurant and bar, known for its “50 burgers and 50 beers” is one of three Sickies locations planned to open around the U.S. in the company’s 10th anniversary year.

Fargo’s second Sickies Garage is ready to throw open its doors, heralding the start of a big anniversary year for the restaurant chain, which plans to open two more locations in 2022 to bring the concept to 10 outlets in 10 years.

The newest Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews, which opened Monday, Feb. 14, will be special, says Scott Upton, bringing the concept around full circle.

“Being able to bring a restaurant back to our hometown means a lot to us,” said Upton, a partner in Sickies and its parent company, Starmark Hospitality.

“Some local Fargo guys started a concept. We’re one of the lucky ones to make it to that level,” he said, during a tour of the metro’s newest eatery on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

The walls at 2551 45th St. S. are crammed with vintage car and motorcycle photos, magazine covers, street signs, beer signs, license plates and other gewgaws.

Look up, you’ll see car and truck hoods suspended from the ceiling or a go kart on the wall. And if you happen to be in the bar area, a 1943 Studebaker truck is bolted above a couple of booths with “about a ton of reinforced steel” a worker says.

“I call it organized chaos,” Upton said of the mancave modern decor.

But it fits with the extensive menu, which showcases the company’s signature “50 burgers and 50 brews” and a host of other items.

This Sickies has a full bar to serve liquor and cocktails. It’s the first in the chain with a bar separated from some of the dining room seating.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on being family friendly,” but the separate bar should make it even moreso, Upton said.

The indoor dining area can hold 200 people, but one section has garage doors that can be brought down to create a room for private events, Upton said.

The kitchen has the latest in automation, including a grill that presses down on burgers to cook them on both sides. A keypad offers options to cook patties to the precise level of doneness, taking a lot of the monitoring and guesswork out of the equation for busy cooks.

Similarly, fries can be automatically dropped, with the baskets rising as each batch is finished.

All of the Sickies restaurants are corporate owned.

Two more outlets are planned to open this year, in Omaha, Neb., and the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, Nev., Upton said.

The restaurant group has learned a lot about the challenges of going nationwide with its far-flung restaurants. The COVID-19 pandemic added lessons in supply chain flexibility and the importance of keeping and attracting good employees. Working with third-party delivery companies is now a cost of doing business, he said.

Upton would like to see Sickies grow at a rate of three restaurants per year. Once the concept hits about 15 stores, Upton said that could be a good point to consider franchising.

The Old Chicago that was once where Sickies is now, closed in April 2020 , one of Fargo-Moorhead’s early hospitality industry casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Upton said the Sickies ownership group was eyeing the property, which is on 45th Street South, one of the metro area’s busiest arterial streets. However, it was hearing of EOLA, a large housing and commercial development by EPIC Companies going up just across the street, that sealed the deal.

Upton is betting that part of southwest Fargo will continue to see rapid growth and he’s excited to see how well the latest Sickies does.

“I look back 10 years ago” when the first Sickies was opened (at 3431 Fiechtner Drive S.), he said. “It’s been amazing. It’s been a fun ride.”

The Victory Lap Challenge at Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews starts with two patty melts — “starts” being the key word.

Those form the bun of sorts, enclosing a middle “bun” of a grilled cheese sandwich. But then Sickies really piles it on: pulled pork, bacon, additional burger patties, two fried eggs, fried jalapenos, fried pickles and boneless wings, with barbecue and sriracha sauces to help hold it all together. And, in case that doesn’t meet your fried quotient, a mountain of french fries is served alongside, for a total of five pounds of food.

The Victory Lap Challenge is $49.99, but if you qualify for the clean plate club in an hour it’s free, and you get a commemorative T-shirt, plus your name on Sickies’ wall of fame.

The Town Square restaurant also has some new menu items, such as warm fry-sized soft pretzel sticks with beer cheese dipping sauce, $9.99; kettle chips with French onion dip, $7.99; the Mozzerati burger with fried cheese curds, marinara and mozzarella cheese, $14.99; and the Chips & Dip Burger, which is topped with kettle chips, French onion dip and provolone cheese, $12.99.

The menu at Sickies, an encyclopedia of brews, burgers, wings, sandwiches and appetizers, is fun and playful. Take the Glazed Doughnut Burger, for example. Who would have thought two glazed doughnuts holding together a beef patty, American cheese and peppered bacon could be so delicious?

Sickies Garage serves up 50 burgers and lots more

There’s a lot to take in at Sickies Garage at Town Square, from the car hanging from the ceiling to the menu boasting 50 burgers, 50 brews, along with appetizers galore and chicken wings that come in more than two dozen sauces.

Sickies’ origin stoy is as freewheeling as its food. It started as an informal gathering of friends at a garage in the Midwest, where they tinkered on cars and motorcycles. Grilling burgers got thrown into the mix, and it became a creative outlet for the DIYers, with each coming up with their signature toppings. Soon, the garage became a place to play hooky, and they would call in “sick” so they could work on their projects and make burgers.

By 2012, the friends opened their first Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews in Fargo, North Dakota. Since then, they’ve expanded to South Dakota and Nebraska, with plans to open in Florida next.

The best way to approach the menu at the Vegas version–fittingly outfitted like a sleek DIY garage–is simply to dive in, starting with apps. With choices ranging from pretzel bites to fried pickles to nachos, you could simply idle there. But rev up your appetite, because the chicken wing section goes way past Buffalo. Hell’s Fury, loaded with ghost peppers, could very well be your final stop, if you can get there.

As for the burgers, it’ll take some time to read all the descriptions, but pay special attention to the only-in-Vegas creations. The High Roller is as ballin’ as they come–one pound of Angus beef stacked with pepper jack cheese, fried jalapeños, fried pickles and peppered bacon, on three layers of Texas toast.

There are also specialty sandwiches, salads and baskets (fish and chips, chicken strips, shrimp and rib tip). And when you get to the end of the menu, you’ll find shakes, malts and root beer floats. Best to pace yourself for a long ride.
